Hi, Wondering if you could help me. I've been using Nvidia HDMI 5.1 to A/V Receiver for a couple of years now and love it. I'm one of these.

Upmix software is usually used in places where you have stereo input to give surround sound output. You often see it in home cinema systems to simulate surround sound from say a CD (mine does it). I suppose there could be stuff to get 7.1 out of 5.1, but the applications for the technology I've seen are electronic in box stuff that resamples it on the fly. Software for this does exist, and is often used in re-mastering audio from TV programs for DVD release. For example, if you are familiar with Dr.

WHo as a TV program, a couple of the BBC's recent Dr. Who releases have had a 5.1 sound mix on them. This was generated using upmix software from the original stereo or mono recordings. Hope this helps Eric. Eric, you're describing something more like 'virtual surround'.

This would come into play when someone is playing back say a 5 channel source through 4 channel gear. This would be a downmix. An upmix does the opposite and increases the number of channels on the source. For example, if you play back a stereo CD on a sound card that supports four channels along with a four channel speaker set.

The source will be 'upmixed' to reproduce the original stereo signal (front left/right audio) on the rear left/right channels.
