While surfing through the numerous channels on cable TV last night, I suddenly stopped on Doordarshan (DD National) channel. How did I forget this channel? I mean, why didn’t I watch this before?
Yes, I too was flown with the modern age, leaving behind my nostalgic moments. This write up more than anything is a nostalgic trip down the memory lane when Doordarshan was the only mode of sheer entertainment in late 90s when we didn’t have cables, Set-top box, DTH or Multiplexes. Before the cable revolution hit in India around 1991, every person in a household only watched DD national and they all used to sit glued to the small screen at their fixed time schedules. It was actually fun watching the DD serials in our childhood.
How many of us remember the Doordarshan serials and shows that were the part of our childhood? Chitrahaar Chitrahaar Old and New songs Yeah! I remember, Chitrahaar was presented on every Friday 7:30pm – 8:00pm. It was a weekly musical show of old and new Hindi songs which we all love to see and listen as well. Chandrakanta Chandrakanta. Dekh Bhai Dekh Dekh Bhai Dekh. All time favorite comedy blast It was the best family comedy show of that time. It was directed by Anand Mahendroo and produced by Jaya Bachchan.

Dekh Bhai Dekh was comic story that revolves around the Diwan family. Shekhar Suman was one of the premier attractions of the show and he later grown with leaps and bounces in the Bollywood industry. Though being a comedy serial, Dekh Bhai Dekh also taught us about how, even during the ups and downs of life, family always stayed together. Serial based on Indian Army This serial canonized and praised the Indian Army and also presented the strict and rigorous training the cadets have to go through. Bollywood King Khan, Shahrukh Khan was one of the lead characters in this serial. And who knew back then that this innocent looking lunky lad would rule Bollywood and become the eternal king of romance. Ramayana Mythological series It was one of the mythological series.
It was presented on every Sunday. The serial pictured the life history of Lord Ram and Devi Sita. It was very famous serial of that times and was appreciated by kids and adults too. Shaktimaan Shaktimaan Kids favorite Shaktimaan was the first ever fictional Superhero of Indian screen before Krish, Ra-one, and Chitti. The lead role was played by Mukesh Khanna and had success of almost 400 episodes.

It was on air for almost 8 years and was largely enjoyed by Indian kids. The serial also gave an effective social message at the end of each episode. Mahabharat Mahabharat The story of 5 Pandavas It was one of the epic which was favorites of everybody at the home. The “Main Samay Hoon” part of this serial was enough to make the atmosphere and the whole house go still and get glued to the TV sets. Jungle Book Jungle Book Cartoon show favorite of children’s Jungle Book was an animated series loved by the children’s. It was aired with 52 successful episodes.
Jungle book was a story of a boy named Mowgli, who gets lost in the jungle and is later brought up by the animals in the jungle and become a favorite of everyone there. Who can forget the tales of Mowgli, Sharekhan, and Bagheera!

As an Indian viewer, one thing always comes to mind when thought about Jungle book, is the voice of Nana Patekar as Sharekhan, it was truly an amazing experience. We are living in 21 st century but still haven’t got a catchy title song as “Jungle jungle Baat Chali Hai Pata Chala Hai, arey chaddi pehen ke phool khila hai phool kila hai!!” 🙂 Shriman Shrimati Shrimaan Shrimati A classic comedy The serial was produced by Adhikari Brothers. It was a comedy serial revolve around the neighbors. This story took “Love thy neighbors” a bit too literally, but however we loved watching this comedy classic for its awesome punch lines. You will be always remembered Miss Keshu, Dilruba, Koki and Prema Ji. The serial gained huge popularity due to its comic timings of actors and its simplicity. So, did you enjoy the journey?
